Do Awards Mean Anything To You In Country Music?

The CMA Awards are only a day away! The pageantry! The glitz! The glamor! The…..feeling like you don’t really care who wins you just want to see the performances? Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE watching award shows. There is always something cool happening and it makes for great conversation the next day, but do you really care who wins? If Luke Bryan wins the Entertainer of the Year Award will you want to go see him in concert more than before? If Kasey Musgraves has the Album of the Year will it make you go buy it? For me, not so much. It could be because working in Country radio I tend to listen to just about anything that comes down the pipe to give it a chance and have my mind made up about how I feel well before awards shows are handing out the hardware. Sure, I want to see what Chris Stapleton does on the show but I’m already a fan for life.
And it probably doesn’t help that there are so many of the award shows now that it’s hard to keep track of it all.
Did you know that Kenny Chesney has never won a Grammy? Or that the People’s Choice awards were held just last night (Blake Shelton won Country Artist of 2018, btw)? Or that Keith Urban is a 10 time Country Music of Tex-Arkana winner? Did you know I made that last one up?
For me the hardware doesn’t mean anything, it’s about the performance. So tomorrow night, crack open a cold one, or a hot chocolate seeing how cold it is, and enjoy good ol’ Country tunes. Maybe your artist takes home something shiny, maybe not. I won’t care as long as I get to HEAR some golden voices.
